What is a Wiki?[]

A wiki is a web application designed to allow multiple authors to add, remove, and edit content. The multiple author capability of wikis makes them effective tools for mass collaborative authoring. Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia, is one of the best known wikis.

This particular wiki is designed for collaborative development of the TerraDrive Universe.

Several characteristics of wikis facilitate their multiple author capability. The most frequently used of these are:

Ease of editing: Traditionally, wikis are edited using the appropriately named wikitext, a markup language that is easier to use than html or xhtml. In addition, many wikis now provide a simple WYSIWYG editor, which allows contributors who infrequently make edits or lack technical knowledge edit wiki pages.

Review and revert: Often other authors will not agree to a change that has been made to a wiki page. Wikis usually provide a system in which authors can review changes to pages and revert to older versions if this is appropriate.

Navigation systems: A traditional hierarchical navigation menu often does not work for wikis because multiple authors create and delete pages. To overcome this problem wikis often rely on internal links, searches and tags to aid navigation.

Discussion pages: Authors frequently need to discuss page contents to reach consensus on page contents. Most wikis facilitate this by having a discussion board attached to each wiki page or some other system for discussion.

How do I Edit Articles?[]

Check out the Cheatsheet for a glossary of wikitext (the markup language that this wiki uses). Be bold, and don't be afraid to edit existing articles if you have something to contribute.

How do I Create Articles?[]

There are two ways to create articles.

1) Edit an existing article, add a new wikilink to the article you want to create, save the existing article, and click the wikilink. Since it links to an article that doesn't exist, it will take you to the new article's edit page.

2) Type the name of the new article in the search box, and after searching, you will get a page that says "No article by this name exists, would you like to create it?" If you do it this way, make sure that there is a wikilink linking from some other article (at least the Contents page) so that the article is not orphaned.
