Nano-vats are the cutting edge of production in the galaxy. Consisting of 3 main parts The processor, the Vat, and the feed lines, these devices can build any item with the correct program and raw materials.
The advantages of Nano-vats are in their ability to recycle any material at hand and recombine it for a new purpose. Also, by constructing items at the molecular level, advanced materials can be created such as superdense metals, perfect crystalline latices, and Mono-molecular chains.
The disadvantages of Nano-vats are that they are slow and costly. Building even the simplest of items, such as a bronze statue, takes as long as a superdense suit of powered battle armor. One molecule of carbon moves just as fast as one of lead. The power and computing requirements for this type of production keeps standard factory line production a staple throughout inhabited space.
The computer brain that directs a countless number of nanites as they build the item. This device controls and synchronizes the action of the nanite horde in the tank and makes sure all parts of the device are completed in order.
Where the work takes place. Normally broken into 2 parts—the center and outer chamber. Active nanites are cycled to the center to work and inactive ones move to outer area to recharge and update their programing for the next task. Looking into a Vat has been known to cause symptoms like sea sickness in some, as the surface is aways rippling and moving with subtle motion.
The Feed LinesEdit
Normally found in industrial vats, these lines carry raw material from holding tanks where it is stored in raw elemental form.
Commercial Nano-vats come in sizes ranging from .5 meters to 2 meters tall with a radius of .5 meter up to 1 meter. Anything larger then this requires the dedicated processing power of a supercomputer.
Industrial Nano-vats have the computing horsepower to run tanks of up to 50 meters tall with radii of 25 meters. Tanks this large are only used in mass production and in the construction of components for the most impregnable (and expensive) starships in the galaxy.
The one exception to this rule is the processing tanks on Ultima Corporation Lamprey-class Resource Extractors, at 1 kilometer deep with a radius of 1 kilometer. These specially designed tanks can only break matter down and sort it to their out flowing feed chutes. With a cost of more then the GDP of 70% of the inhabited systems, these tanks are considered one of the most valuable things in the galaxy.
